Decentralization of the Communication Authority of Kenya’s operations to the counties has been tipped to enhance the regulator’s capacity to among others monitor license compliance and address complaints from consumers adequately.

Speaking while opening the Nyeri regional offices, Communication’s Authority Director General Francis Wangusi said that the authority is utilizing the Universal Access Fund to expand mobile telephony to 71 sub-locations shunned by telephone companies.

The ICT sector last year contributed 9.6 percent to Kenya’s Gross Domestic Product, highlighting its growing importance to the economy.

To further increase its uptake, the CAK is decentralizing its services to the counties and has so far opened up regional offices in Mombasa, Kisumu and Eldoret.

Speaking during the opening of its fourth regional office in Nyeri, Director General Francis Wangusi noted that even as the sector expanded, there was need to offer consumers quality services.

The ICT sector has become a key generator of economic opportunities especially in the areas of mobile telephony, mobile money transfer, data services and development of applications.

Health Cabinet Secretary Sicily Kariuki expects the ICT sector to create more job opportunities especially for the youth
