Pastoralists in Kajiado County diversify into poultry farming

Pastoralists in Kajiado County are diversifying into poultry farming as a fall back plan after dry weather patterns and diminishing land has made it almost impossible to keep large herds of livestock.

The pastoralists say poultry keeping is offering them an alternative source of income to sustain their livelihoods.

Over the years, most residents of Kajiado have been practicing pastoralism as their main source of livelihood, an economic activity that is increasingly under threat due to erratic rains and diminishing land.

The pastoralists have formed groups for them to be trained and share ideas on the best poultry farming practices.

This has been helped by the ready market for poultry products in the area, which some farmers have been using to buy feeds for their remaining animals.

The farmers say they took up poultry farming since it requires less space and water challenges in the area discouraged them from venturing into crop farming.

Despite training, most of the farmers here lack adequate broiler chicken rearing skills to effectively compete in the market.
