The local administration in Kilifi County has been challenged to deal decisively with those promoting child marriages and taking advantage of minors resulting in teen pregnancies.
Magarini MP Michael Kingi , decrying the increase of cases of girls forced to drop out of school due to early pregnancy wants those responsible for their pregnancies to face the law.
Extreme poverty has seen teenage girls in adu ward in Kilifi, easily lured into sex in exchange for money which not only puts them at risk of pregnancy but contracting sexually transmitted diseases.
Adu is Located in one of the drought stricken areas of the county where majority of the locals rely on relief food for survival.
Due to low education standards and cases of early pregnancies, Kingi has called on stakeholders to come together and address the problem.
During a stakeholders meeting that brought together MCA’s, parents , head teachers and Board of Management members from different schools in the Ward, Adu Secondary School Principal Paul Kibin said the girls fall prey because they are from poor backgrounds and are forced to live in rental houses due to long distances from home to the school.
Nathaniel Kadhengi Tuva, a Boda Boda operator and a parent at Adu Secondary, says it is a sad state of affairs as some girls borrow as little as Ksh 50 to buy sanitary pads in exchange for sex.
Another parent Kithome Muthama is now calling on the school management to introduce boarding facilities in the schools.
The area MP wants the local administration to crackdown on the vice calling on parents to take responsibility for their children.
