A group of activists Tuesday held demos in Nairobi calling for the resignation of Kenya National Hospital-KNH- CEO Lily Koros and Health Cabinet Secretary Cleopa Mailu following allegations of rape at the facility.

The peaceful demonstrations dubbed “end KNH rot” started from freedom corner to KNH at 7AM.

Health Cabinet Secretary Cleopa Mailu The activists said the perceived violence against women at KNH is despicable and that they also demand for better health care.

The cabinet secretary is expected to release a report today (Tuesday) on the allegations.

KNH has since asked the Director of Criminal Investigations to investigate as they did not have any record of assault.

KNH was put on the spot after allegations of rape, attempted rape and sexual harassment first came to the fore on social media on Thursday where scores of mothers recounted harrowing tales of how they were accosted along dimly lit stairs and elevators with most victims pointing a finger at morgue attendants moving bodies at night.

The KNH management has since approved the engagement of additional security from private security firms and requested the National Police Service to increase coverage of the hospital in order to boost security.

In a statement, the KNH Board Chairman Mark Bor said they had also asked the hospital management to explore the viability of breastfeeding mothers being relocated closer to the new born unit for convenience.

Bor further called on other victims who have also experienced such sexual assault as alleged on social media to come forward and record their statements directly to the board or to any external investigating agencies.Health Cabinet Secretary Cleopa Mailu

While regretting the allegation of rape attempts as well as petty theft in the facility, Bor assured patients of their safety as they seek treatment and other services from the hospital.

Meanwhile, DCI’s George Kinoti has deployed a specialized team of forensic investigators to the Kenyatta National Hospital to look into allegations of rape and harassment of patients.

Kinoti says the team comprising seasoned investigators from different formations under the DCI, and Gender and Children Department of the police.

The investigation team also received CCTV footage from KNH.
