Tharaka Nithi County Senator Prof Kithure Kindiki has challenged religious leaders in the country to engage President Uhuru Kenyatta and opposition leader Raila Odinga to prevent violence that may arise in the event the latter is sworn in on January 30th.

The Senate Deputy Speaker said the swearing in was unconstitutional and would only cause skirmishes in the country.

Kindiki, who spoke during Sunday service at Magundu Catholic Church in Maara constituency, asked the clergy to act swiftly and avoid last minute calls for dialogue between the two political divides.

“It’s time you bring the President and leader of the Opposition to the same table for peace to prevail in all parts of our country,” he urged.

The senator noted that if the church does not take charge, the pull and push being witnessed could likely tear the country apart as it happened after the disputed 2007 general elections.

He faulted Odinga for deceiving Nasa followers that he would take charge of the country after the swearing ceremony, noting that the Kenyan constitution only allows one person to occupy the top most seat at a time.

“President Uhuru was constitutionally elected and declared the winner by the electoral body and there is no way somebody who never took part in the polls would become the President,” said the Senator.

He asked Opposition leaders to respect the  Constitution noting that the country cannot have two presidents and should he (Raila) and his deputy Kalonzo Musyoka be sworn in, they will have no place to operate from because State House is already occupied by the legitimate president and his deputy.

“Nasa has a team of lawyers and I challenge them to raise their concerns through the available legal procedures,” he concluded.
