Kenya recorded a 1.2 percent growth in the number of mobile subscribers to 40.3 million in 2017.
According to the Communications Authority Annual Report, this was supported by heightened competition between operators to woo customers through promotions and special offers.
Safaricom, Airtel, Orange now Telkom and Equitel are the only operators with more than one million subscribers.
The communications authority notes in its annual report that Kenya’s mobile penetration rate stood at 88.7% in 2017.
Nonetheless, the figure is well over above Africa’s penetration rate of 74.6%.
Of the total, Safaricom has 29.2 million subscribers, followed by Airtel at 6.2 million, while Orange which has since rebranded to Telkom after a takeover boasts of 2.9 million subscribers.
Equitel comes in 4th with 1.9 million, Mobilepay 87,786 and Sema having just 263 subscribers.
Similarly, mobile money also recorded growth in subscriptions which grew 6.7% in 2017 to stand at 28 million subscribers.
On the other hand, continued deployment of fiber optic and mobile broadband infrastructure has resulted to an increase in the availability of internet services.
This has further been supported by affordability of data and devices which has seen a surge in over the top services manly streaming services.
Mobile data subscription grew 9.9% last year to stand at 29.4 million up from 26.8 million recorded in 2016.
