The Uasin Gishu County Government has set aside Khs. 314 million to provide loans to cooperative societies.
Governor Jackson Mandago said the move would enable the cooperative societies to provide their members with affordable loans to address poverty and improve the living standards of the county residents.
Speaking when he presided over the issuance of title deeds to 74 teachers who are members of Mwalimu Sacco at Chepkang’a Trading Centre Saturday, Mandago challenged other teachers to take advantage of the opportunities available to get loans.
Mwalimu Sacco initiated a Ksh 300 million revolving fund two years ago for its members to buy land.
The 74 teachers from Elgeyo Marakwet and Baringo branch shared 20.5 acres of land that the Sacco bought for them.
Mandago who is also a member of the Sacco hailed the initiative saying it will promote the agenda for building houses for their members.
“It’s good that the Sacco picked on provision of decent and affordable houses for its members which is part of the government’s big four agenda,” he said.
Mwalimu National Sacco Chairperson Teresa Mutegi said through the revolving fund they want to see that the living standard of teachers was improved.
“We are buying plots for them and intent to introduce them to cheap technology of building homes,” she said.
Concerning urban development, Mandago said his administration has put in place measure to zone the county into areas for industrial, residential and commercial farming and subsequently discouraged sub division of land into small pieces and mushrooming of shanties and slums.
