Meru University Vice Chancellor Japhet Magambo has been sent on terminal leave pending expiry of his term in June.

Education Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohamed who toured the Meru based University announced that Prof Charity Gichuki would take over the running of the in an acting capacity.

Professor Charity Gichuki has been serving as the deputy VC in charge of finance and administration will take over as the VC in an acting capacity.

“The university council is working with the acting VC to ensure that studies are resumed and the students return as soon as possible in order to stabilise the situation,” said CS Amina.

This move by the Education CS comes shortly after Evans Njoroge, Secretary General of the student council was killed during demonstrations against hiking of tuition fees.

The 23-year-old, a vibrant and outspoken leader, was a fourth year student pursuing a degree in Mathematics and Computer Science.

After his murder, protests and concerted calls for Magambo to resign was mounted. This is as he stayed firm, saying he did not see a reason to resign.

A post-mortem was done on the student leader at the Meru Level Five Hospital on Saturday.

The post-mortem was led by government pathologist Johansen Oduor in the presence of a team of doctors, Independent Policing and Oversight Authority (Ipoa) officials and criminal investigation officers.

Speaking after the post-mortem, family doctor Moses Njue said the examination indicates Njoroge was shot on contact with a pistol.

He said the student leader was shot through the back of the head and the bullet exited through the ear causing instant death.

Dr Njue said the post-mortem report would be ready in two to three weeks.

“We have established that the pistol was placed on his head and shot. The single shot caused multiple skull fractures and damage on the brain leading to instant death,” he said.

Amina has ordered that the institution which was shut down following the deadly students riots to be opened in a week’s time
