First ever open heart surgery performed at Kericho Referral Hospital

The first ever open heart surgery and cardiac pacemaker implantation has been conducted at Kericho County Referral Hospital by a team of cardiology specialists from the United States.

The free exercise will see a total of six patients attended to on daily basis with a target of 20 patients by the end of the exercise in a week period.

Kericho governor Paul Chepkwony, his Bomet counterpart Joyce Laboso and representatives from the County government of Kisumu witnessed the launch of the exercise.

Governor Chepkwony said each pace maker implantation costs Kenyans Ksh 500,000 and they are doing it for free in partnership with the US cardiologists.

Among the patients who were being attended to were from Nairobi, Kiambu and other counties.

Bomet governor Joyce Laboso lauded the exercise saying that it is one of the fruits of devolution.

She lauded the team of specialist for giving 21st century treatment in the villages.

Thomas Crawford, who led a team of doctors, said that their goal is to improve health for the community and extend lives by implanting pace makers.
