The Kenya Meat Commission will be fully digitized and mechanized in two weeks as the abattoir seeks to reduce manpower by more than half.

The commission’s management says the digitization of the Athi River and Mombasa plants will greatly boost production as well as revenue.

The commission has been going through tough times over in recent years with the meat processor being shut for fifteen years before re-opened after a government bailout in 2006.

Recently, the commission retrenched some of its employees to cut down on the wage bill.

The commission is banking on automation to contain operational costs.

The meat processor hopes that the digitization programme that is expected to be completed in a fortnight would help it reduce the workforce by 70 percent.

The meat processor is spending 940 million shillings on refurbishment and modernization of the Athi River and Mombasa abattoirs.

The refurbishment which is being carried out by a Turkish company will boost capacity to 2,000 animals, up from the current 300 animals.

With the automation and refurbishment, the meat processor expects to mechanize the de-horning and skinning process.
